Raising Boys

Dolls. Dancing. Makeup. Dolls. Barbies. Pink. Dress-up. Bows. Dolls. That's what my childhood was like. I was no tomboy. I was girly from my head to my toes. I had ribbons in my hair and tap shoes on my feet more often than not. I was afraid of a softball and didn't like to be sweaty. I had names picked out for all of my future children. But you know what? They were usually all girl names. If someone had told me that I would have a house full of boys, I would have never believed them.

But wow. God's plans are so different from our own. And not only are they different, they are so much better. When we found out that each of our babies were boys, I was filled with such joy. You know why? Because those three precious boys are part of God's perfect plan for my life. He knew my house would be filled with blue and Legos and action figures and baseballs and Tonka trucks long before we did. And He also knew that I would love it. Is it fun cleaning up bathrooms after little guys who have really bad aim? Or trying to keep three rowdy little boys calm in quiet public places? Not necessarily. But I love those three dirty, messy, loud, silly little guys so much that it's more than worth it. God has called me to be their mom, and I am SO thankful that He did. Have I ever wondered what it might be like to have a little girl running around the house? Of course. Just like those parents who have all girls might wonder what it's like to have a son. Or a mom of one child might wonder what it would be like to have two or three. Or a blonde might wonder what it's like to be a brunette. Or an accountant might wonder what it would be like to be a nurse or a teacher. Doesn't mean we don't love who we are or what we have. It just means we are humans. And that's ok.

I have also been asked multiple times why we aren't adopting a little girl. Some people are surprised that with three little boys, that we would choose to adopt another. And if I'm being honest, when we were at the beginning stages of the adoption process, we both assumed that we probably would adopt a daughter. But God began to make it clear to us very early on that we would be giving our boys another little brother. We had the option to wait on accepting a referral until a little girl was available. But we could have been waiting a really long time- years even. We ultimately decided that we wanted to add another child to our family more than we wanted to add a daughter to our family. We didn't want sit and wait for a female to become available while little boys sat and waited on families. Now I'm not saying that's what is right for anyone else's family or situation. This is just our story. And what was right for us.

So I'm embracing my role as "Boy Mom" and learning the ropes of raising sons. We are just learning as we go, praying for guidance, and asking for forgiveness when we mess up. And I have accepted the fact that we will mess up. We've also learned to trust our instincts and raise our boys the way we feel is right for our family. We don't have to parent the exact same way our friends parent. And we don't have to feel guilty about that.  We have learned to discipline our kids the way we feel they need to be disciplined - not the way we feel other people think we should disciple them.  I've caught myself getting on to them for things that normally I'd brush off, just because I'm afraid whoever I'm around might think I need to be correcting them. And that's not the mom I want to be. I'm becoming confident in my role as Brody, Beckett, and Levi's mom. (And soon-to-be Lennox's mom.)

Something else I've figured out six years into raising boys - boys are not girls. They shouldn't be expected to behave like girls. Boys are all about action - watching it, but more importantly, being a part of it. I've figured out that I shouldn't take them to a swimming pool, then tell them not to splash me.  I can't be unrealistic. They need to be able to expend that energy. I just have to come up with creative ways for them to do so. Boys like to be dirty sometimes! They'd rather be covered in dirt, rolling in the grass rather than sitting neatly at a table with their crayons and coloring book. Now don't misunderstand me. They should absolutely know how to behave. They should know manners and take responsibility for their own actions. But I also have to remind myself sometimes that they are little boys. They are loud and rambunctious. That's how they are made. And I shouldn't try to change that - I just have to steer their activeness in the right direction.

So, as I tread through the waters of little boyhood - I now dream of four brothers rough-housing and playing football in the backyard. I look forward to them finding loving wives and becoming daddies to their own precious little ones. And I see what an incredible job we have ahead of us. To raise these four boys to be supportive loving husbands, spiritual leaders for their families, hard workers, attentive present fathers. That can be so overwhelming to think about. But thank goodness we have a God who loves them even more than we do.

Is this how I imagined motherhood would be for me? Not even close. It's better. So much better.

Weary but Thankful

Tonight, I am weary. It's just been one of those days...weeks, really. I am just worn out. The boys fought and argued all day. I haven't been sleeping good. I've been trying to clean my house for two days but have gotten nowhere, because there are three little guys who have been demanding my attention from the time they open their eyes until the time they fall asleep. And usually a few times in between. I've lost my patience and raised my voice more than I'd like to admit. We had to put my car in the shop today. You know how it is. We all have  those days where we feel like we have nothing left to give. But instead of going to bed frustrated tonight, I want to write a short little list of little things I'm thankful for right now. And hopefully this will change my attitude. Because I really do know, I am so very blessed.

{I am thankful for...}

My mother-in-law who is letting me drive her car for a few days while mine is in the shop. I'm also SO thankful she invited us over for dinner tonight.

Friends who get genuinely excited when I send them new pictures of Lennox.

Three little boys who can't get enough hugs and kisses before bedtime.

Our air conditioner. Really. VERY thankful for a/c. It's hot out.

Mint green nail polish.

The way Levi calls a kiss a "po-po"...the Korean word for kiss.

Movement within Korean adoptions.

My cappuccino.

My husband.

...Well, it's amazing how quickly that can help. I feel better. And tomorrow is another day! I get to kiss those sweet faces when they wake up in the morning (probably way too early...haha), and take another shot at getting a room or two clean. I'm also very thankful I get to stay home with these boys, and I don't ever want to forget that. Even if I grow weary some days...

Pool Party

We had a birthday party for Levi and Lennox Saturday evening. I love that I finally have kids with summer birthdays so that we can have pool parties! So easy and fun! Levi wanted a Jake and the Neverland Pirates party, so that's just what he got. We loved getting to celebrate Lennox, as well. We sang Happy Birthday twice - once for Levi and again for Lennox. All of the kids blew out a number once candle for Lennox. In fact, we lit and relit it about 5 times, because everyone wanted a chance to blow it out. Each guest also brought a children's book for Lennox, with a message to him written on the inside. We will put them away and save them for when he comes home. I hope they will be special to him one day - as a reminder of how we celebrated his first birthday even before he came home.

We sure do love our tiniest boys and hope they both had wonderful birthdays!!

Lennox Chan {One Year Old}

I cannot believe the time has come to write this post. I can't believe that precious chubby 5 month old has already celebrated his first birthday. Lennox turned a year old on June 14, and I want to honor that with a letter to him.

Dear precious Lennox,
   You are now a big one year old! It is so hard to believe that we are already celebrating your first birthday. We had a party for you and Levi this weekend, and I wish so badly that you had been here with us. You had so many friends and family there, sweet boy, wishing you a happy birthday. You are SO loved and SO treasured.
   As much as we missed you, as we always do, I know that you were celebrated big in Korea, too! Your foster family loves you very much, and I have no doubt that your day was full of love. I can't wait to get your first birthday update to hear all about your Dol Ceremony (traditional Korean first birthday ceremony) and what you are up to now that you are a big one year old!
   I love watching how God is intertwining you into our lives already - how your brothers pray for you at night, seeing your picture around our home, planning for your arrival. I love that when we talk about "next year", our plans include you - Next year at Brody's baseball games we will have another little one running around. Next summer when we come to the lake, there will be another little one splashing around. Next time we light a candle to celebrate your birthday, YOU will be here to blow it out. While we still have no guarantees of when you will be home with us, we are praying that it is soon!
   We can't wait until the day we can get on that plane and fly to your country. How I long to just be in the same city as you. I am so anxious to hold your little hand, kiss the top of your head, and tell you in person how loved you are. You are beautiful. You are special. You are MADE BY GOD, and he is going to use your story and your life for so much good.
   We love you, Lennox. And we pray that this is the last birthday we have to spend away from you! Happy first birthday, sweet boy!

Friday Funday

I started off the day wondering what in the world I was going to do to keep my three entertained all day. They were whining "I'm bored" by 8 a.m.  Thankfully mom called about 8:15 to see if we wanted to take the kids to the lake to play for a couple hours. Of course I did! So, we drove to Lake Claiborne and spent the morning splashing in the water, lounging in the sun, reading magazines, and watching the kids catch minnows. It was so relaxing, and the boys were all so good.

After returning home from the lake, the boys were ready to go to Mimi and PawPaw's to see them, because they were finally home from their 11 day vacation. Pawpaw was on the tractor when we got there, so they stood in the yard waving their arms and yelling until he finally saw them and drove over. He piled them all on the tractor, and they were so happy to see him!

We decided that we were going to try to catch fish for supper that night, but Dad needed to go check a few wells first, so while Brent and the boys got the fishing gear ready, Levi and I rode with Dad. Levi thought he was so big!

We ended the day fishing on the banks of the pond, and then eating a delicious dinner of fish, fries, hush puppies, and baked beans. It certainly was a fun Friday!
